In a special edition of Hardtalk from Doha, Stephen Sackur talks to Khaled Meshaal, the leader of Hamas. The Palestinian Islamist movement is currently locked in a grim and costly military confrontation with Israel in Gaza. The pressure on Hamas is immense — military, political and diplomatic.
British MP for Bradford West, George Galloway, says the area he represents will reject all anything Israeli — including tourists — in wake of Gaza operations: “We reject this illegal, barbarous, savage state that calls itself Israel.” He was speaking at a meeting of his Respect Party in Leeds over the weekend when he made the comments. Galloway also urged residents of Leeds “to do the same.”
“We have declared Bradford an Israel-free zone,” he says at the beginning of the recording.
“We don’t want any Israeli goods. We don’t want any Israeli services. We don’t want any Israeli academics, coming to the university or the college. We don’t even want any Israeli tourists to come to Bradford, if any of them had thought of doing so,” he says.
“We reject this illegal, barbarous, savage state that calls itself Israel. And you have to do the same,” he concluded.
A brilliant overview of the latest wave of Israeli violence against Palestine. For those wanting a basic understanding of why Israel attacked Palestine, offered a ceasefire and had a ground invasion should watch this interview with Dr. Norman Finkelstein. Finkelstein, who has extensively studied and written about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for over three decades, explains the reason behind this offensive and what the end game will be for Gaza. In addition to this analysis, he answers questions about Hamas’ rockets and tunnels as well as Israel’s Iron Dome. We take a look at how these components came together resulting in the deadliest attack in Gaza.

1. “Hamas fired 2,000 rockets at Israel!”
A: How many rockets, missiles, tank shells, cluster bombs, white phosphorous bombs, bullets, cannons and grenades has Israel unleashed on the Palestinians? It’s a sad situation and only reflective of the evident bias when you can count to the 3rd decimal point the number of Hamas projectiles but be completely clueless about Israel’s arsenal.
2. “Israel is defending itself. What would you do if someone was firing rockets at your country?!”
A: If I occupied a people, placed a crippling trade and economic embargo on them, placed them under siege, humiliated them daily via military and police checkpoints, controlled their water and electricity, constructed apartheid “Jewish-only roads”, shot their children, bombed their schools, mosques and business, illegally seized their lands, destroyed their crops, demolished their homes, threw thousands of them in dungeons and treated them like sub-humans and they fired rockets at me – I would probably stop doing all of the above.
Secondly, Israel has been mass murdering the Palestinians for over 60 years — long before any rockets were fired and long before Hamas was even in existence. So this is nothing but a fallacy designed to deflect the reality of the situation and mislead others. Finally, Israel’s indiscriminate use of heavy weaponry in civilian areas is a war crime, not self defense.
